Savemore’s lorries carried three names: Hull · Doncaster · London. The London store was a discount house in Stepney — and in 1965 The Guinness Book of Records listed it as having the biggest selling area of any shop in the United Kingdom: 20,000 square feet.
That was more selling space than Tesco’s largest supermarket in Leicester, and more than Fine Fare’s record-breaking store at Tolworth. Twelve years after the market stall, a Hull family business held a national record.
The store’s exact address and opening date are still being researched.
