Queues at George Street were constant, even with very early opening for people on their way to or from the night shift. In 1962 Clifford bought the Priory Cinema at the junction of Willerby Road and Calvert Lane, in the north-western suburbs of Hull.
The Priory Supermarket had around 15,000 square feet of selling space and its own car park — the largest supermarket in the city, and a boon for the growing number of families who shopped by car.
